Happy Holidays from Wyckoff Schools!

A team of students at Eisenhower Middle School were chosen as one of only 300 schools in the country (and one of eight in NJ) to move on to the next round in Samsung's "Solve for Tomorrow" design challenge. In being selected a state finalist, EMS will be awarded a $2,500 Samsung technology prize package and continue competing to win the national prize of a $100,000 package. Next, students will work toward being named a state winner and ultimately a national finalist. The team, comprised of students Chris H., Greyson P., Shaela S., and Chris S. (and mentored by teachers Angelo Bonavitacola, Marc DeBlock, and Jason Opremcak), now turns their attention towards engaging the community and using the design thinking process to design, engineer, and test a prototype.
From the Samsung website: Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is a nationwide competition designed to empower students in grades 6–12 to leverage the power of STEM to create innovative solutions addressing critical issues in their local communities. The competition engages U.S. Gen Z students to catalyze change by applying Problem-based Learning (PBL) principles, environmental stewardship, and entrepreneurship to address some of society’s most pressing challenges. It also promotes active, hands-on learning, making STEM more tangible and showcasing its real-world applications.

Fourth graders are studying fast land changes. We built structures out of marshmallows and toothpicks and then tested their strength with a Jello earthquake.

In the fall, 1st grade artists explored the work of Van Gogh! We learned about his paintings of sunflowers and which colors he used to create realistic renditions. We used our skills to draw the different shapes, paint the flowers, and add texture backgrounds!

These 4th graders launched their book clubs today! They came up with rules and goals for their reading.
"We need another rule! Be patient!"-4th grader

During technology class at Washington School this week, third graders disguised turkeys and first graders coded Ozobots to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast.

After reading and discussing Balloons Over Broadway, 2nd and 5th grade students used the design process to create their own balloons and paraded thru the halls of Coolidge School.

Second grade students created their own Thanksgiving floats! 🦃
