Gr. 7-8 Back to School Night

Our excellent faculty and staff welcomed our wonderful students back to school this week, and it has been a happy and busy time as all are getting acquainted with new classes, teachers, and peers. A hearty welcome to the new students, families and staff who joined WSD this year. We trust you will find your school to be a caring community that pursues excellence and personalizes learning for all. This weekend, our country will recognize Patriot Day, the anniversary of September 11, 2001. We remember and honor all those whose lives were lost that day and those that gave their lives to help others.

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

This week is National Suicide Awareness Week. As of July 2022, 988 became the nationwide 3-digit dialing code for Mental Health Crisis and Suicide Prevention. When you call or text to 988, or chat through https://988lifeline.org/chat/, you will be connected to the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, where care and support will be available for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress, thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a friend or loved one who may need crisis support. We have printed this new hotline on the back of each student ID card at the middle school, per NJ law.

Curriculum Updates Posted

Several curriculum updates were approved by the school board last month, in accordance with the New Jersey Learning Standards. The district’s curriculum can be viewed on our website at wyckoffps.org.

Elementary Progress Measures Begin

Our academic screening for students in Grades K to 5 will begin next week. AIMSweb Plus (Academic Improvement Measurement System) is an assessment tool that uses curriculum-based and standards-based measures to assess student progress in literacy and math. This brief screener is used two to three times a year in Grades K-5 to inform teaching and strengthen the effectiveness of instruction.

NJ Start Strong Assessments Scheduled

Students in Grades 4-8 will participate in the NJ Start Strong assessments later this month. These online assessments cover English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science (Grade 6 only), and take approximately 45-60 minutes to administer. Middle school assessments begin September 19th;  elementary begins September 28th.
