What is the purpose of a group?Children, like adults, have strengths and weaknesses. As a need arises for a particular group, I consider the strengths and skills a student may bring to the group, as well as, what are the skills he or she may need to improve. Therefore, if your child is invited to join a group it is because he or she has something of value to teach the other members.
A typical group has six or seven members. The students decorate folders for their work and write the rules of the group. We perform role-plays, play games, and discuss scenarios where there may be multiple solutions allowing the students to verbalize and articulate their feelings. The purpose is to let the children have a fun time while they learn new skills through actions and role-modeling.
