The nationally recognized Wyckoff Public School District has earned a well-deserved reputation for educational excellence placing it among the top-rated academic institutions in the country. The Eisenhower Middle School was designated as a New Jersey Star School and has received the "National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence" award. The instructional staff has been highly recognized by many organizations and has received numerous grants and awards including, but not limited to, New Jersey Best Practices, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the Milken Foundation, the Shell Science Teacher Award program, Fulbright Scholarships, the Freeman Foundation, and the Toyota Tapestry Award. The District Business Office has earned the Association of School Business Officials International Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award every year since 2004. George Washington Elementary School and Sicomac Elementary School have been named "Reward" schools for superior performance in 2014 and 2013 respectively, by the NJ Department of Education.
The Wyckoff Public Schools share an educational philosophy based on the commitment to help each student reach his or her potential intellectually, socially and emotionally. We have established outstanding programming to address a broad range of student learning needs from special education to gifted and talented students This K-8 district is home to approximately 2,100 students within four (K-5) Elementary Schools and one (6-8) Middle School. The District has an operating budget of almost $40 million and is constantly upgrading both curriculum and facilities.
The District's curriculum is aligned with the State's Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core. The use of educational technology is thoroughly integrated in the curriculum. Test scores in statewide and nationally recognized standardized assessments, for both general and special student populations, are among the highest in both the region and nation. District assessment procedures include: standards-based report cards, the Fountas and Pinnell reading assessment, NJ ASK Science in grades 4 and 8, the PARCC assessment, and ongoing formative and summative teacher assessments. Assessment results provide important information to help us monitor and adjust our program of studies for our students.
In this age of information, we are constantly challenged to provide our students with the appropriate kinds of knowledge, skills and tools that will prepare them for their place as innovators and leaders in the future. Wyckoff has a 1:1 program utilizing Chromebook laptop computers in grades 4-7. In addition, there are hundreds of tablets and laptops throughout the district for student use. Throughout our curriculum we provide opportunities for students to acquire knowledge and skills as they begin their lifetime of learning. Our programs are developed to reflect current research and best practices, stressing subject integration, cooperative learning strategies, relevance, equity, and increased use of technology. Students acquire the habits of inquiry necessary to prepare them effectively for the technological and information age of the twenty-first century. For the past several years, the emphasis
forcurriculum and instruction in the Wyckoff Schools has been on learning content more through critical-thinking and problem-solving strategies than through rote learning of facts. Through performance tasks, presentations and portfolios, students reflect upon their acquired knowledge and demonstrate they can apply what they have learned.
The Wyckoff Parent Teacher Organization is an extremely active and vital part of the school district. Parents working together with faculty and administration, volunteer to provide programs and services of enrichment to students. The PTO serves to promote understanding and cooperation among the homes, schools and community. Offerings to enhance the education of our students include after school programs ranging from science to foreign language.
Wyckoff is fortunate to have a district-wide Educational Foundation to assist in funding educational tools for learning. With the community's support, the Wyckoff Educational Foundation (WEF) has raised over $1.5 million dollars in contributions for the Wyckoff Public Schools. The Foundation has donated in the areas of technology, performing arts, teacher grants, and character education programs.
Finally, our professional staff is continuously engaged in voluntary and required professional development activities including graduate work, in-service programs, district course work, ongoing support groups, and special workshops. In addition, each summer, creative and dedicated staff members are employed to assess, evaluate and revise selected curriculum areas. Once this foundation has been established, all staff members are asked for input throughout the year. Most importantly, this process of continuous learning serves as an excellent model for our students and community.
