The children have been enjoying reading our Shared Readers and Star Books. We have been working on increasing the children’s sight word vocabulary through the use of the shared reading books. The children are using great reading strategies such as referring to the pictures to figure out tricky words, looking at the initial letter to stretch the word, and one to one correspondence to read each word carefully.
In writing workshop we finished the first half of our first unit- Personal Narratives. The children did a wonderful job using pictures, labels, and words to tell a true story. They were all very excited to select their favorite writing piece to “publish”. We hope you all enjoyed reading their stories at home!
In math we worked on many concepts such as, one more/one less, counting up and down from 10, counting with one to one correspondence, ordinal numbers, and the basic concept of addition and subtraction. During class we use a variety of manipulatives to engage the children and provide a tactile approach to learning. They are enjoying exploring number sense through games with partners and in small groups.
In word study, we added letter sounds to our cards packs and practiced blending sounds together to make words, such as, C A T. We introduced short vowel a, as well as the consonants c, f, j, and p. From this list we are able to make a lot of words on our blending board.
During Exploring Time this month many activities were centered around the fall season. Children painted their own pumpkins on small easels, painted fall trees, and used loose parts to create their own version of monsters.
We continued our focus on extreme weather. The children are having fun learning all about hurricanes, tornados, and blizzards. We are looking forward to creating a weather painting soon!
This was a busy month for Social Studies! We learned all about the first Thanksgiving and enjoyed a wonderful feast complete with all the fixings! It was so much fun! A special thanks to all of our parents who either contributed and/or helped to make it such a success!
