Welcome to Sicomac Elementary School Technology!
My name is Jason Opremcak and I am the Technology Teacher at Sicomac School. Students will come to the computer lab once a week for an hour-long class during which we will have discussions, instruction, collaborative learning, and hands-on technology projects. Throughout the course of the year, students will be instructed on proper mouse and keyboard usage, graphic and media design, internet/online safety, Google Apps for Education, and programming - among other things.
In the early elementary grades, the focus will be on proper input and communication with the computer, learning how to receive output from the computer, and communicating and sharing with others using appropriate software tools. In the upper elementary grades, the focus will be on using Google Apps for Education (most notably Google Classroom, the newest application in Google's suite of education products) to facilitate learning and collaboration, and also learning how to program using various coding techniques.
The video below is entitled "What Most Schools Don't Teach" with regard to programming. I am committed to changing that - programming will be a basic part of our current students' lives by the time they graduate high school. It is a tool to help you think logically and algorithmically, which will benefit students in all areas of learning. We will be doing many coding projects this year in Scratch, Kodable, Tynker, and LightBot. We will also be having many CoderDojo sessions throughout the year - be sure to check Sicomac's homepage and sign up for a Dojo!
