School Safety Awareness Week

School Safety Awareness Week
Posted on 10/15/2021

Next week is School Safety Awareness Week. During the third week of October each year, we review how to keep schools safe and secure; and how to recognize students in need of help. WSD officials met with local law enforcement and emergency management personnel this past week to conduct our annual review of safety and security protocols. The annual inspection of school facilities was also conducted to ensure all required health and safety measures are in place.

NJ Start Strong Testing Complete

New Jersey’s Start Strong assessments were administered this week to students in Grades 4 to 8, measuring student performance in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science (Grade 6 only). The New Jersey Department of Education plans to make the results available to families through a parent portal; we will advise when this information is released. These state assessments, along with WSD’s elementary screener through AIMSWeb and other internal benchmark assessments, are designed to identify and address the learning needs of our students and to inform instructional practices. WSD has reading and math specialists as well as school counselors on-site at each school to address students’ academic and social-emotional needs. If you have concerns about your child’s transition back to full-time learning or in other areas, please reach out to your child’s teacher or principal to discuss the best line of support.

Elementary Student Council Elections

The Student Council election process is underway at our elementary schools. Upper elementary students have the opportunity to run for leadership positions, including classroom representatives or executive officers. The Student Council participates in decisions about school affairs, such as school spirit days, beautification of the grounds, etc., under the direction of a teacher advisor. We commend all students who pursue this valuable leadership endeavor.

Reminder: COVID-19 Documentation for Parent Volunteers

Parents who plan to volunteer at WSD schools are reminded to submit relevant COVID-19 documents by October 18th. For details, visit the Vaccination Documentation page on our website.

WSD Partners with Wyckoff Environmental Commission

WSD students in grades 3 through 8 were invited by the Wyckoff Environmental Commission to participate in a poster contest about the importance of styrofoam recycling. Congratulations to the contest winners, whose names and artwork are posted on the WEC website.
