Academic Literacy Workshop

Entering Grades K and 1

Entering Grades 6 - 8

This class will offer explicit instruction in reading, writing, and word study that is balanced with opportunities for guided and independent practice. Students will work on skills and strategies for comprehension, word solving, vocabulary development, and fluency. Students will also follow the steps of the writing process and focus on language conventions, including grammar, as they study and write authentic writing pieces.

This class addresses arithmetic, conceptual understandings, higher order thinking and problem-solving strategies. Opportunities will be provided for students to become fluent in basic skills and computations; to develop critical and analytical reasoning; master the mathematical vocabulary needed to communicate universally in proper mathematical language; and to include technology as a vehicle for enhancing and extending learning.

Keep your skills sharp by building vocabulary and practicing grammar through summer themed activities. Teachers will host live Google Meet sessions where you’ll explore a different theme each day through books, videos, games, and arts and crafts.  A list of supplies will be shared for students who participate. 


3D Printing Design (Tech)

Entering Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6

Mr. DeBlock

Check out the exciting world of 3D Designing using Tinkercad!  Make your ideas come to life as you design furniture, cars, rockets, animals, and more!  Students will be able to select an item to be 3D printed or laser engraved at a later time. The teacher will teach techniques using Google Meet and Google Classroom. Students will need access to a computer.


New ABC Puppet People! (LAL)

Entering Grade K and 1

Mrs. Surgent

Your incoming kindergartener will learn all about alphabet letters with puppets! Each day the teacher will present a letter puppet craft, read aloud, and song via Zoom. Together, the children will practice fine and gross motor skills, build social skills, and learn tips and tricks about getting ready for kindergarten! Materials: brown paper bags, markers, gluestick, and coloring materials.


Abracadabra Science (Science)

Entering Grades K, 1, 2, and 3

Miss Doctor

Have you ever seen milk vanish into thin air? Was it magic? Or...was it science!? Many tricks that magicians use are illusions based on science. Join us to use the wonders of science to trick your friends and family or put on your own magic show! Miss Doctor will host live google meet sessions where you’ll get to learn a new magic trick each class. Magic lessons will be recorded and posted for students to refer back to on Google Classroom. A list of supplies will be shared for students to be able to participate. 


Art Around the World (Social Studies/Art)

Join us as we dive into different cultures from around the world by exploring the art that they create. Each day we will touch down on a different country around the globe, and examine the artistic beauty of their culture. From African masks, to Australian dot art boomerangs, to Canadian Inuit Inukshuk - we're going to explore it all and make our own re-creations while we learn about the history and geography of the world. Miss Doctor will host live google meet sessions where you’ll get to take a trip around the world from the comfort of your home! World art lessons will be recorded and posted for students to refer back to on Google Classroom. A list of supplies will be shared for students to be able to participate. 



New Backyard Games (Fitness)

Entering Grades 2, 3, and 4

This will be an online class based around our favorite backyard games. Classes will consist of game design and crafting as well as playing the games together. These games will be activities like Ring Toss and Bag-O. We will be challenging students with game design and physical tasks. Most importantly we will have fun being active!  


 

New Broadway Bound! (Theater)

Entering Grades K, 1, and 2

Students will work on all elements of theater, and create a small LIVE Google Meet show to perform for families.  Students will create their own costumes, choose their own songs to perform, and will work on scenes to complement their songs. 


Bullet Journaling (LAL/Art)

Entering Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8

Ms. Sancilio

Have you ever wondered how to make organization fun, artistic, and relaxing? Bullet journaling is a method of organization where one can track schedules, homework, birthdays, goals, and more, all in one journal. Bullet journaling is currently one of the trendiest ways to stay organized and involves skills like calligraphy, doodling, and lots of creativity thrown in! After this course, students will have techniques for organizing that they can take with them for years to come. Ms. Sancilio will host live Google Meet sessions where you’ll learn techniques in real time. A list of supplies will be shared for students to be able to participate.


Computer Coding and the Physical World (STEM)

Entering Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6

Mr. DeBlock

Do you like to play video games and work on computers?  Learn the concepts behind programming and create your own interactive projects. Bring your programming to life as we learn to connect the virtual and physical worlds using Makey Makey and other stuff.  All levels of experience are welcome.

Students will learn to code, program, and design using Scratch, a web based program. The teacher will provide live online instruction and create several coded video games and more.  Students will need access to a computer.

  

New Doodle and Draw (LAL/Art)

Entering grades 3, 4 5 and 6

Do you like to doodle and draw?  Take it to the next level on Google Meet.  In this class, students will learn and practice drawing skills and turn their talents into creative stories in the form of comics. Learn how to develop characters and create short comic strips or longer comic books! Students will need blank paper, pencils, and other art supplies.

Draw a Story (LAL/Art) Entering Grades K, 1 and 2 Ms. Reid Do you like to draw? Do you like to tell stories? Students will be shown the basics of narrative art and how they can use their drawings to illustrate stories. They will learn about the parts of drawings and stories then create various characters in settings that come alive on the page! Miss Reid will host Google Meet sessions. Students will have access to a layout page that will be printed each day where students will draw and write their stories on at home. A list of supplies will be shared for students to participate.

New Fiber Art (Arts/Maker)

Entering Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8

Students will explore and create knitting and original projects that incorporate yarn, string, or other fibers to create original works of art. Students will create one of a kind art projects.  Learn how to make dream catchers and friendship bracelets. Artists will make bookmarks, self-portraits and or wall hangings through the art of weaving. Learn how to make pom poms to add to your one of a kind creations. A supply list will be given. 


Film and Literature - Avengers & Mysteries too (LAL)

Entering Grades 6, 7, and 8

Calling all film lovers! We will be comparing and contrasting films alongside written stories. We will also analyze how films are created to engage viewers and bring a story to life. Title options include: Matilda, Holes, Bridge to Terabithia, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The class will meet on Google Meet. We use Google Classroom to share film clips and class materials. Each student will need a copy of the book prior to the start of class. 


Go Greek! (LAL)

Entering Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8

Ms. Valinoti

A course designed to introduce students to a deeper knowledge of Greek mythology characters. Students will learn more about the significance of these ancient figures through activities that bring ancient times to life. Students will also look at examples of Greek mythology characters in popular culture. The teacher will present information using digital programs and students will work independently at home using digital platforms including but not limited to Google Meet, Google Drive, and more.


New Hogwarts Stitch Witchery (Maker)

Entering Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8

What house would you be sorted into at Hogwarts? Once you’ve decided - you will need a hat and scarf in your house colors to wear all winter long and to Quidditch matches. Young wizards and witches will learn basic knitting stitches to make their very own Hogwarts scarf and hat set. The teacher will provide a list of materials and present live demonstrations online. H


New Joyful Journaling (LAL/Art)

Entering Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8

This course is designed to help students build writing stamina and explore their creative side! Students will write daily journal pieces using a prompt and/or an idea of their own choosing. Students will be able to share their writing and dive deeper into their identity as a writer. The goal of this course is to expose students to writing as a personal form of expression. Writing pieces will include: anecdotes, blog posts, poems, biography, and/or personal narratives. The class will meet using Google Meet. Each student may use a digital journal or a physical journal to complete their writing pieces. 


Let’s Cheer It Up! (Fitness)

A course designed to teach the basics of cheerleading with one of the Eisenhower Middle School Cheer Coaches! We will review cheer techniques for motions, jumps, stretches, conditioning and learn some EMS Cheers! Cheerleaders will join on Google Meet video conferencing daily to practice together! Cheerleaders should still dress in comfortable clothes and sneakers and have access to an open space to practice!


Let’s Get Crafty (Arts/Crafts) Bracelets & Beading

k-5 

Are you a crafter? Do you love to make things out of household items? Is Michaels your favorite store? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this class is the right one for you.  We will be crafting from the first day. The teacher will present information through demonstrations on Google Meet. A list of supplies will be provided.



Manipulating Math (Math)

Are you looking for a fun, hands-on math experience for your child? Look no further! The teacher will present to students on Google Meet how to manipulate math through read-alouds, music, projects, and games. Together we will reinforce basic math concepts to create exciting experiences such as playing card games, counting with playdough, and using household objects to build and create! It’s math mania! Materials: uno cards, a deck of playing cards, construction paper, dice, scissors, and construction paper. 


Middle School Book Club (LAL)

Calling all readers! Come read this summer in book clubs! Book clubs are a great way to foster social skills, independence, and a love for reading! Learn how much fun reading can be! The teacher will present information on Google Meet.  


Mystery Bag (STEM)

Do you like to be creative and build awesome objects? Then join us in this mystery STEM challenge! In this class, the teacher will show an experiment live via Google Meet. Then, each student will build their project!  A list of supplies (most typical household items) to have for building each day’s creation! 

 

New Nature Crafts and Stories (Maker/LAL)

Entering grades K, 1, 2, and 3

Mrs. Simon

Do you love being in nature and exploring its beauty? Do you reduce, reuse, and recycle? Learn how to make different crafts and listen to a fun story each day. Some of the fun items we will make include bird feeders, stick animals, tic-tac-toe boards, bookmarks, and piggy banks! The teacher will present live and the students will follow along and build their crafts at home. The supply list includes: natural materials (rocks, sticks, leaves, flowers), acrylic paint in a few colors, paintbrush, recycled materials (milk cartons, water bottles, cardboard, cans, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons), string/ribbon, glue, tape, and scissors.

New No-Bake Sweet Treats! (Maker)

Entering Grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 4

Let’s have some fun learning how to make some easy, sweet treats for summertime! The recipe book will be shared prior to the class starting so materials are ready to go. No oven or stovetop baking is required. Typical baking utensils will be needed. The teacher will demonstrate and work with the students live over Google Meet.


New No-Bake and Some Bake Treats! (Maker)

Entering Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8

Let’s have some fun learning how to make some easy, sweet treats for summertime! The recipe book will be shared prior to the class starting so materials are ready to go. Some will include the use of the oven (Adult supervision is recommended), but no stove is required. Typical baking utensils will be needed. The teacher will demonstrate and work with the students live over Google Meet.


Paint Adventure (Art) & Epic Animal Art

Entering Grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

Let’s take a ride on a Paint Adventure! Students will be given the opportunity to expand their painting skills by learning new techniques and experimenting with different painting surfaces. Students will create several paintings on canvases, natural materials, and t-shirts. The teacher will host Google Meet sessions where students will learn different painting techniques on different surfaces! A list of supplies will be shared. 


Painted Animal Masterpieces (Art)

Entering Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8

Follow along in this step-by-step class to create your own painted animal masterpieces with acrylic paint. Each painting is customizable with your favorite colors to make each creation your own! Learn the basics of painting along with shadowing, highlighting, and blending in this introductory course. The teacher will present live video demonstrations while the students follow along at home to create their paintings. Required materials: tabletop easel (optional but helpful), brushes (small, medium, large), canvases, acrylic paint in a variety of colors, paper plates, and a heavy plastic cup.


New Painting Naturescapes with Acrylics (Art)

Entering Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8

Follow along in this step-by-step class to create your own painted naturescapes of trees, flowers, etc. with acrylic paint. New Safety First (SEL)

Have your child meet and interact with other kindergarteners as they learn about fire safety, healthy habits, and community helpers via Zoom! Your incoming kindergartener will play games, sing songs, create crafts, and listen to read alouds through daily zoom meetings with the teacher. Children will be encouraged to take their learning outside and practice their safety tips and healthy habits! 


Secret Spy Code (LAL/Math)

Entering Grades  2, 3, 4, and 5

Miss Doctor

In this class, we will learn different codes and ciphers so that we can be like spies, and keep our information secret. Codes and ciphers will include pigpen, a phonetic alphabet, tap code, substitution ciphers, and alpha-numerical codes. The teacher will host live Google Meet sessions where you’ll get to become a spy from your home headquarters! 

Science In A Jar (Science)

Entering Grades K, 1, 2, and 3

What can you do in a jar? Quite a lot! These mason jar science experiments are so entertaining, and help teach children the basics of the scientific method and science in a fun and accessible way! Kids will be able to complete different STEM activities to learn how to make rainbows walk, make a volcano erupt slime, make a rubber egg, create a tornado in a jar, and many more! The teacher will host live Google Meet sessions. A list of supplies will be shared for students to be able to participate. 

 

New Summer Book Club (LAL)

Grades 3, 4 and 5

Session 1 ONLY

Grades 4 and 5 will be reading "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate Dicamillo, a classic tale about a porcelain toy rabbit who learns about friendship and love. The teacher will host live Google Meet sessions where students will get to read the book together, and have engaging group discussions about the book. A list of supplies will be provided in order for students to complete a few arts and crafts activities based on the book.


New WeVideo (Tech)

Entering Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6

Want to create cool and exciting videos to share with others?  Learn the basics of video editing, adding transitions, music voiceovers and more to make fun and interesting videos. Students will use the Website WeVideo and will need access to a computer or chromebook.



Wonderful Fun (LAL/STEM) & Rhythm

Entering Grade K - 3

Daily themes are visited in Wonderful Fun as we share great pieces of children's literature & music. Delightful creative Makerspace projects will help reinforce comprehension. Social skills and positive self-esteem are built as students share their projects. Each day will be focused on skills that will help to prepare your child for school.

When you add it all up, it definitely translates to Wonderful Fun! The class will be offered through Google Meet. 


New Words, Words, Words (LAL)

Entering Grades 4, 5, 6, and 7

This course will focus on building students’ vocabulary, learning root words, and discovering just plain strange but interesting words! Students will learn and explore new words each day with an activity to understand meaning, spelling, and application. We will also play games such as Scrabble, Bananagrams, and Boggle! Students will have the opportunity to create their own WORD game to share with family and friends! The class will meet using Google Meet. Most Word Games will be available to play online. 


Yoga

Entering Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8

Ms. Strippoli

Dive into yoga this summer! Students will be guided through different yoga classes each day. Each day will have a new intention to help bring mindfulness, strength, and focus. Breathing techniques and various yoga postures for body positivity, flexibility, and self-esteem will be practiced in all classes. The teacher will present information using Google Meet. The course is offered in two different periods. 


Yoga with a Theme (Fitness/LAL)

Entering Grades K, 1, 2, and 3

Ms. Mihalik

Are you a fan of Star Wars? Mermaids? Race cars? Disney? Animals?! Then you will love this yoga class! Each day is a new theme! We will move and relax through yoga poses set to each day’s theme. Students will also have themed music, videos and storybooks to help focus the class on the day’s intention. Learn how to stretch, focus and relax while having fun with your favorite characters. Students will receive a schedule in advance in case they would like to dress up for each yoga theme day.  The teacher will present information using Google Meet.


Zumba Fitness - Jump Start Kids! (Fitness)

Have you ever had a Go Noodle Brain Break in class and wanted to rock the moves on the Zumba channel? In this class, we will learn the core styles of dancing for Zumba and learn kid-friendly routines based on original Zumba choreography. We'll break down the steps, and learn games, activities and explore the cultural elements of Zumba! Join in the fun and learn many fun moves! Students will meet daily with the teacher using Zoom.
