Info About Instrumental Music at Eisenhower

General Requirements:

All 6th graders are required to take a performance ensemble to fulfill their music requirement.

In 7th grade, students may choose to continue in band, perform in chorus, or opt out into a world music class. (research and project based)

In 8th grade, students may choose to continue in band, perform in chorus, or opt out of music altogether.
(Because of the nature of our scheduling, we rarely are able to accept a student who has left the instrumental program and wishes to return. Occasionally, if a student commits to private lessons and agrees to play an instrument that is lacking in the ensemble, (like tuba) we may make an exception.)

Lessons & Grading:

  1. Music and PE are on an A/B day schedule. Students have their group lesson opposite their PE class as part of their daily schedule.
  2. The band lessons mix lesson book work (Standard of Excellence, books 2&3) with concert music.
  3. Students are graded as such: 50% individual playing quizzes (once a month, or so), 25% class performance, 15% band rehearsal performance, 10% preparation.
  4. Grades are usually up-to-date to the minute on Genesis.

Ensembles

  1. There is one full band for each grade. (60-70 students)
  2. Each band meets once a week during TIEE time. (35 minutes in the middle of each day during which students do not have class)
  3. We offer an audition-only jazz band to 6-8th graders which meets after school on Thursdays.
