Picture Day

Next week, our schools will observe Fire Prevention Week and New Jersey’s Week of Respect. Fire Safety assemblies will be held, kindness lessons will be taught, and students will receive age-appropriate instruction on the prevention of harassment, intimidation, and bullying. Last month, Picture Day and Back-to-School Night were held at each of our schools. Thank you to our teachers, principals and PTO for making these in-person events a success.

Elementary Progress Measures Underway
Students in Grades 1 to 5 recently participated in the district’s semi-annual academic screening. AIMSweb Plus (Academic Improvement Measurement System) is an online tool that uses curriculum-based and standards-based measures to assess student progress in literacy and math. This brief screener is used two to three times a year in Grades K-5 to inform teaching and strengthen the effectiveness of instruction.

Responsive Classroom
Washington School's lead kindergarten teacher Mrs. Ramirez provided professional development for select elementary teachers this week on the tenets and methodology of Responsive Classroom. The Responsive Classroom approach to teaching integrates academic and social-emotional skills so students can do their best learning. Our classroom morning meetings represent one key element of this technique, where students develop fundamental skills such as perseverance and goal-setting through interactive modeling.

Student Council Elections
Eisenhower Middle School held elections last week for Student Council Homeroom Representatives. Each homeroom in grades six through eight elected two representatives. These elected volunteer leaders serve an important role in soliciting student input on school affairs and activities and enriching the student experience. We commend all students who ran for these positions and congratulate the newly elected officers.
