Today marks the end of the first academic trimester. The Wyckoff School District has moved through the start of the school year with strength and recovery after the many challenges and schedule interruptions we faced last year. The high points of this fall have been the consistency and quality of our academic and extracurricular programs due to the dedication and expertise of our faculty and staff, the eagerness and hard work of our students, and the continued partnership of our parents and families. Last week, we were shaken again when we lost our beloved counselor and social worker Mrs. Paula Rubenacker so suddenly. I am moved as a district leader by the way our school community responded to this tragic loss. In the midst of their shock and hurt, staff, students, and parents rallied together around the Rubenacker family and around each other, sharing their grief and pain, while celebrating who Paula was and expressing gratitude for the legacy she left. As we continue through the holiday season, let us take that same sense of gratitude with us — for those that have left an indelible mark of goodness and giving on us and on our children, and for the teachers, counselors, principals, aides, secretaries, bus drivers, custodians, and others that we are blessed to have in our children’s lives every day.

Sicomac Chorus to Sing on Radio; Sports and Music Highlights

Holiday concerts are underway this month for students in the chorus at each of our elementary schools.  Under the direction of their music teacher Mr. Potosnak, Sicomac School’s 4th and 5th grade chorus will be featured on a special radio broadcast this coming Monday, December 13th at 8:00am on WSUS 102.3 (a popular Sussex county radio station). To listen to the broadcast on Monday morning, visit iHeartRadio.com and select 102.3 WSUS. At the middle school, winter concerts are scheduled for January, and auditions for the EMS spring musical will take place next week. The EMS basketball and cheerleading season also begins this month. We wish our students all the best as they pursue their interests and passions in these extracurricular areas, with the support of their music teachers and athletic coaches.

Student Awards

Congratulations to the EMS student recipients of the October and November Character Awards. These students demonstrated empathy, honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, and a willingness to be inclusive of all of their peers. The recent winners are listed on the school’s website at eisenhower.wyckoffps.org. Congratulations also to the six EMS students who earned awards at the recent JAMUN VII Conference hosted by the Bergen County Academies. The JAMUN Conference is an academic simulation where students play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real world issues with the policies and perspectives of their assigned country. Well done to all students who participated and prepared with the support of their teacher advisors, Ms. Bolognini, Ms. Harrichand, and Ms. Moolji. The list of awards and recipients can be found on the school’s website at eisenhower.wyckoffps.org.
