During this first week of March, our schools celebrated National Read Across America Week. Under the direction of their teachers and library media specialists, students engaged in schoolwide reading events, favorite book contests, character parades, mystery readers, and a myriad of other activities designed to promote the joy of reading. The fun continues throughout the month, and we encourage parents to join in at home by taking some time to “drop everything and read.”

COVID-19 Protocol Update

Effective Monday, March 7th, masks will be optional on school buses and in school. Individuals may freely decide whether and when to wear a mask or not to. Also, carrying a mask in a pocket or backpack is one viable idea for individuals who may wish to wear it in certain circumstances and not in others. Additionally, as we look ahead from a pandemic status and mode of operation to more endemic, WSD will move to a disease-control model for COVID-19, exercising the public health response strategies used for other infectious diseases in schools, such as the flu. Thus, our schools will no longer conduct contract tracing nor impose related quarantines for COVID-19. We will continue to follow COVID-19 positive exclusion guidelines, and individuals are expected to wear a mask upon return from isolation during days 6 through 10 after COVID-19 infection. We will continue reasonable distancing in school, but will not guarantee a minimum distance between students. Our current lunch protocols will remain in place for the present time. We will continue to be flexible and adjust as needed in the months ahead.

Upcoming Parent Seminar

The Wyckoff Connected Parents Series continues with a “STEM Lab and ETV Tour” at Eisenhower Middle School next Tuesday, March 8th. The tour will be facilitated by EMS teacher Marc DeBlock and will include a behind the scenes look at the ETV studio and a sampling of hands-on, design thinking activities in the STEM Lab in our award-winning middle school. Please see our district website for the registration link and for a full list of offerings in the Connected Parents series.

Teachers Win a Class Set of Fitness Watches

Congratulations to Coolidge teacher Jordan Paton and WSD supervisor Katie de St. Paer for their recent contest win of a full class set of Polar E-Unite fitness watches, valued at over $5,000.00. The contest was held at the recent 103rd annual SHAPE NJ Convention, attended by our WSD physical education and health teachers and administrators. Ms. Paton will pilot the fitness watches with select Coolidge classes to teach them how to track their heart rate and to monitor progress toward their health and fitness goals.

ACCESS for ELL Assessment

The ACCESS for ELL assessment will be administered over the next few weeks to all WSD English language learners. The ACCESS measures growth in English language proficiency and is taken annually by English language learners in Kindergarten through Grade 12 in New Jersey public schools.
