Spring 2022 NJSLA Testing Dates Gr. 3-8

April 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Students in the state of New Jersey will participate in the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) in the areas of Language Arts, Mathematics (grades 3-11) and Science (grades 5 and 8). The NJSLA is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards. The valuable results can provide you and our district with timely information about your child’s progress and are utilized by teachers and administrators to improve curricula, teaching, and learning for all students. Student participation in NJSLA testing is a whole community effort. We ask for your assistance in getting your children to school on time, well rested and having eaten a nutritious breakfast. Once testing has begun, we are unable to allow students to enter the testing rooms. Failure to report to school on time those days will result in scheduling your child for makeup testing. We kindly ask that you to try to schedule appointments for your child (e.g. doctor, dentist) around the testing schedule. Please remind your children to keep their electronic devices, including cell phones and smart watches home or secure in their lockers during testing, as electronics are not permitted in the testing rooms. The NJSLA assessment does not impact promotion or retention in grades 3-8. It is important to note that participation in the NJSLA assessment is not optional and there is no protocol by which parents can elect to have their child exempt from taking the test. More information about the NJSLA assessments is available at the New Jersey Student Assessment website.

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) has randomly selected the Wyckoff School District to participate in the English Language Arts (ELA) Field Test for the spring 2022 state assessments. Field Testing is considered part of the statewide assessment program and is embedded in the operational assessment for the districts selected. The field test items do not count toward a student’s score. The primary purpose of the ELA field test is to evaluate test items (“test the test questions”) to ensure that all of the questions that appear on the operational assessments do a good job of measuring the content and skills they are intended to measure. The field testing also ensures the questions are clear and are fair to all students. Every question goes through multiple rounds of review by assessment professionals and committees, prior to being field tested. A final determination regarding the quality of each question is made only after it has been included in a test taken by students and resulting field test data has been analyzed.
