In third grade the students will be finishing their chapter on area and perimeter in math. The next chapter focuses on time. The students will be practicing telling time to the nearest minute, converting hours and minutes, adding/subtracting hours and minutes, and finding elapsed time. It would be helpful if the students practiced using elapsed time at home in everyday situations. For reading, the focus is on interpreting messages across myths, fables, folktales, and fairy tales. The students will be reading a variety of fairytale, fable, and folktale books these next few weeks. They will work on retelling and summarizing these stories. The unit will conclude with myths from around the world. For writing, the students will be adapting and writing fairy tales. We will read versions of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Three Billy Goats Gruff and looking at how each one compares to the original. We have completed our unit in science on rocks and minerals, and the children will be using some of the material learned when we visit the Sterling Mines in May for our field trip.
