    Discovery Programming

    Grades K-2
    • Students who successfully participated in the program in the previous grade are invited to continue into the following year’s program.

    • New students are nominated by their teachers based on in class performance and assessments through the Teacher Rating Scale

    • Students that have been nominated will be given their grade level screener to see if they are performing one grade level above based on the district benchmarks and the Creativity and Problem Solving screener.

    • Students that have shown high ability in either or both screenings will be given the CogAT7 Screener.

    • Once all the information is collected, it will be reviewed by the committee for final scoring. The committee consists of the building principal, grade level teachers, and the gifted and talented specialists who will also discuss student motivation, independence, ability and affinity to handle extra challenge and demands of a pull-out program, and overall fit to the program. Evidence of elements of Williams’ Taxonomy (fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, risk-taking, complexity, curiosity, and  imagination) will be addressed.

     

    Grades 3-5:

    • Students who successfully participated in the program in the  previous grade are invited to continue into the following year’s program.

    • New students may be added based on CogAT 7 and PARCC scores, Teacher Rating Scale, creativity, problem-solving, and committee recommendations.  A cognitive score in the top 15% of the grade will be regarded as a benchmark for admission to the program. The committee consists of the building principal, grade level teachers, and the gifted and talented specialists who will also discuss student motivation, independence, ability and affinity to handle extra challenge and demands of a pull-out program, and overall fit to the program.  Evidence of elements of Williams’ Taxonomy (fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, risk-taking, complexity, curiosity, and  imagination) will be addressed.

    • Selection is for one year.  Each student will be evaluated in the spring for continuance the following year.

    • Students in grade 5 will be administered the CogAT screener in the fall.  Students who are new to the pool based on CogAT scores in the top 15% of the grade will be evaluated.


    Entrance Criteria for a Student New to the District:

    • Students new to the district will be nominated by classroom teachers and will be assessed using the same criteria used for eligibility of their current peers in the Wyckoff School District. (Cognitive Test may be administered.)


    Exit Procedure:

    • Students may be exited from the program due to lack of motivation, consistent failure to meet deadlines, or poor performance in Discovery class.  Students will be assessed twice a year using the Discovery Performance Rubric. Parents will be advised by phone that a conference with the teacher and student is warranted and the situation will be discussed to determine the best interests of the student and the class.  Please see Discovery Programming Performance Rubric.


    Appeal Process:

    • Parents or teachers may appeal for a student’s entrance into the Discovery Program.  They must complete an appeal form.  Final decisions for admission to the program are determined by the administrative council.


    CogAT:
