EISENHOWER MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE & SCHEDULE OVERVIEW In our beautiful, new music suite, all band students receive a group lesson on their chosen instrument every other day. (Day A or Day B) The students in the lesson classes are grouped homogeneously by instrument family (ie. Brass, Woodwind or Percussion). In their lessons, students learn to read musical notation and develop the physical playing skills (hand position, fingerings, posture, breathing, articulation, etc.) unique to their instrument. They work on daily warm-ups, scales, rudiments and concert selections in preparation for playing with the full band. Each grade level (6, 7 & 8) at Eisenhower has their own concert band which number approx. 85. The second and equally important component of the Instrumental Music curriculum is the once-a-week, full-ensemble band rehearsal. During this practice, all the skills that the student has learned in lessons is brought together, with the crucial, added element of learning to play with all the other instruments in a full ensemble. The bands prepare at least two public concerts during the year (usually in January and May). The 8th grade band also participates in the FLOW Band Festival sponsored by our high schools. Please view the Music Department page on the Eisenhower School website for a listing of the dates and times of our concerts for the year. I LOVE playing and teaching music to young people and I look forward to a most rewarding and successful year filled with accomplishment, satisfaction and fun! |
