Art {3R} Middle School Art Curriculum The sixth grade art curriculum is an introduction to the middle school visual arts program. Students are engaged in all aspects of the total curriculum based on the New Jersey Visual Art Standards. These standards include aesthetics, elements and principles of design, critique and history and culture of art. Projects based on the above mentioned standards are designed to meet the needs of the sixth grade student. The sixth grade program sets in motion the process of critical thinking in the area of art. A variety of media is used in the production of art to accomplish this goal. 7 The seventh grade curriculum further develops upon the standards taught in the sixth grade program. Projects are developed which expand upon the higher skills of the middle school student. Lessons focus on previous understanding of the New Jersey State Visual Arts Standards while fostering creative and original approaches to visual arts problem solving. Drawing, painting, designs both two and three-dimensional will prepare the students for the advanced work in eight grade art. It is at this grade level that students begin to make the connection to create more advanced art.
The eighth grade curriculum is the culmination of the school districts sequential K-8 art program. This course is focused on higher level art production as well as aesthetics, principles and elements of design and art history. Students work in all areas and media including drawing, painting, mixed media and sculpture. Lessons are designed to build upon concepts and skills taught throughout the earlier grades. A more mature and advanced approach is encouraged while stressing creative problem solving. Students in eighth grade art are prepared for further study in high school and beyond. |
