Planet Day of Service Makes Student Ideas Reality

Construction two years ago at Eisenhower Middle School in Wyckoff, NJ, created two enclosed courtyards of concrete, gravel, and weeds. Over the past two years, students in grade 7 and 8 science classes have tracked the path of the sun, investigated plants, measured the heat island effect of the two areas, and brainstormed mitigation strategies that would use vegetation to cool the classrooms adjacent to the courtyards.

On April 22, 2010, the New Jersey Landscape Contractions Association (NJCLA) turned student ideas into reality transforming the courtyards into outdoor science classrooms. When middle school parent and president of NJLCA, Jody Shilan learned of the need for professional assistance in implementing the student plans, he approached other members of NJLCA. The NJLCA adopted the Eisenhower Middle School as their Planet Day of service project.

The project is supported by grants from the CIBA Foundation, Wyckoff Education Foundation, Friends of Wyckoff, student fundraising, and donations from local businesses and contractors. Once completed, the two courtyards will provide areas for study of sustainable agriculture, gardening, ecosystem interactions, climate, and weather and feature a greenhouse and multiple garden spaces.
